Tarbert, with its splendid natural harbour supports a busy fishing fleet thankful of its shelter and protection of Robert the Bruce's 13th Century Castle. Heading south from Tarbert you enter the peninsula of Kintyre. Over to the west lies Kennacraig ferry terminal, where the ferry leaves heading for the Isle of Islay.
Carrying on, you come to the picturesque holiday village of Carradale with its busy fishing fleet. Carradale's Network Centre found in the village is a good way to find out more about the area.
South again and your next stop is the Royal Burgh of Campbeltown, Kintyre's main town. To find out about Campbeltown's historical past a visit to the Campbeltown Heritage Centre is a must.
Only 12 miles from the Antrim coast of Northern Ireland, it is hoped to restart a ferry link between Campbeltown and its opposite number on the Irish side, Ballycastle.
At Southend, St. Columba's footprints can be found in a rock signifying where the Saint first preached in Scotland.
Machrihanish known for its past as airbase stations is now visited for its golf course rated by none other than Jack Nicklaus himself. Machrihanish's beach is a popular location for surfing and windsurfing.
Further up the west side you come to Tayinloan where the ferry to the Isle of Gigha leaves from. Achamore Gardens on Gigha are well worth a visit as is the nine-hole golf course. Gigha has recently been bought over by its inhabitants giving them a sense of control over their own destiny.
