Leaving Scotland's first National
Park, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, you pass through the village of Arrochar
and enter Cowal.
Heading on North, you travel up the Rest and Be Thankful where a left turn will
take you in the direction of Hell's Glen and Lochgoilhead. Further south, the
village of Strachur with the famous Creggans Inn and a fine salmon river, is
where a decision has to be taken, whether to carry on down the coast road
through Otter Ferry round to Tighnabruich, a popular sailing area, or, down
towards Dunoon.
Sitting on the Firth of Clyde to the south of Loch Long and Loch Goil, Dunoon
is Cowal's capital and principal town. This busy town is ideally situated and
equipped to be the base for touring and exploring this area of southern
Argyll.
Further south from Dunoon you pass through the villages of Inellan and on to
Toward and its 15th Century Castle with its turbulent history, where in 1646,
200 Lamont clansmen were massacred by the Campbells. Thankfully today, this
area is a scene of tranquility and peacefullness.
